| The assassin lunged forward, the mongoose unmoving from his spot, looking all the world as if he'd frozen in place. He was excited, guessing that his claws would soon tear into the creature. Just as he was about to collide, he suddenly found his paws in the sand, legs buckling in the unexpectedness of not finding a body under his paws. Rage gleamed in his features as he turned, to angered to consider the tiny foot steps he heard behind him...
He couldn't do anything, and realized even Otso noticed the situation. The assassin was fast and had a head start. Ryuu still had to try, so he ran forward, throat paralyzed and unable to make a sound in his fear. Suddenly, Egan wasn't there anymore and had managed to scramble to the side, apparently never been frozen in the first place. An unusual ploy, but it worked. Ryuu still had momentum from his running, though, and kept running. He didn't know what he'd do, but he might as well attack and hope he didn't die.
He saw the leader turn around, a mad gleam in his eyes. By now, he couldn't stop running, even if he wanted to. Suddenly, Egan appeared from under the leader's standing body, who was clearly unaware. He leapt upwards at the exposed throat as Ryuu made a decision to leap up, also aiming at the throat.
The enraged wolf didn't have a chance to react as two sets of teeth bit down. Although they individually didn't have a good bite, together they opened more puncture wounds, blood draining just as much as a normal wolf biting down.
The assassin who hadn't moved this whole time still stood still, a look of disgust on his features. No rightful assassin would let his emotions get the best of him. The moment they became who they were, they'd given up feeling useless things like pride. Wrath was good, but not when spurred by pride. He turned and gave a commanding bark as the whelp started to run in for the kill, orders aimed to the one fighting the whelp's guardian, turning into a growl when he was disobeyed. It appeared as if someone forgot who was the real leader of the group. The job was important, but it was important to defer to the most experienced of the group, even over the assigned leader in situations like this. They couldn't kill a target if they were dead. They had to survive to get reinforcements. His eyes narrowed. Then again, the only other surviving wolf was a warrior, not an assassin. Fighting to the death was in his blood. They should have let him die those minutes ago.
With a glare at the dead body on the ground, he turned and quickly darted through the sands, soft and rapidly fading lyrics promising a return...
The warrior just managed to avoid a nasty knock on the head, but in the process, ended up landing heavily on his shoulder. Ignoring the pain as he got up, he noticed the other worried about and calling to the whelp, and decided to try another attack as he surged forward, jaws opened and ready to clamp down anywhere he could reach, wondering if the other wolf would notice in time and get out of the way. From the corner of his mind, he heard a command to leave, but who was that wolf to order him around with his command dead? No. He'd finish this wolf off and the whelp and eat the mongoose. He knew he'd win if this wolf didn't focus on the fight.

| Otso detected a flicker of movement in the corner of his eye, and turned to take it face-first. Gashes and lacerations appeared all over his face, but already in a fog of pain, the new sensations were lost to him. He lunged at his opponents wounded shoulder, blood running slowly down his matted pelt. He aimed his teeth for the veins that he suspected lay closer to the surface there, and hoped, in turn, that his teeth would hit their target. At the same time, he readied himself to swipe sharp claws at the opponent's belly, should the opportunity arise. To create one, he began to rear up. He just hoped the other wolf would respond likewise, or he risked being gutted like a salmon. | |

The warrior noticed the attack, and angled his body to take the hit on a less vulnerable site on his shoulder. He could almost feel blood spray out, but it wasn't a fatal wound. It didn't matter. Woulds could heal as long as they didn't kill him, and he had no intentions of keeling over anytime soon. He guessed noticing this inefficient attack, the other let go to rear up, but the warrior wouldn't take the bait. Growling with the intent to finish this fight so he could get the job done, he started to move to duck under the paws to attack the vulnerable stomach, but suddenly hesitated, turning to try to look at something behind him, forgetting that this may cost him his life... The warrior's bulk would be preventing Otso from seeing what had distracted him.

| ((OOC: Im sooooooo sorry about how badly the last post sucked T.T This one might not be much better, but I'll try!!! :3))
Otso tensed his shoulders as he hovered in space, preparing to bring his form crashing down on his opponent's spine. A growl rumbled in his throat, and his face twisted into a snarl, ropes of saliva twisting out of his slightly-parted maw. Focusing his orbs on his opponent's shoulder blades, he began to fall back to earth. He wondered briefly if his own body would absorb the shock of impact in it's wounded state, but he had made his move and couldn't stop now.
He let a harsh bark tear out of his throat as he drove his body down to the sands. He was angry now. These assassins were not getting away with this. He wondered briefly if they should run, but he doubted that would earn them a respite. With that in mind, he battled on.

| ((You're doing fine. We all get bad days for posting.)) He wasn't aware of the actions above him, just those behind. He moved in attempt to catch the distraction, but it kept moving, and he moved in response to try to grab at the moving figure. All too late, he heard a growl above him, and started to look up to see what was happening, but before he could look properly, there was an impact on the back of his neck, badly injuring it, but he wasn't dead... yet. As his body landed on the ground, he knew he was dead. He wouldn't be able to lift his head off the ground in his neck's state.
Ryuuketsu backed away from the warrior's body, Egan on his back, seeing Otso coming down. While the older wolf had been focused on attacking the spine, a far better option would be to attack the neck. They distracted the other wolf this whole time, and he was glad to have been able to somewhat understand the mongoose. He hadn't known what he was doing, but he just did what the mongoose had while listening to his instincts. Still, his body shook slightly from the experience. While it wasn't horrifying him, he hadn't been excited about it. Perhaps he was trembling in shock or confusion, he didn't know.
He didn't care that the wolf wasn't dead yet- Otso would probably finish him off- and he backed up to get away from the three carcasses, closer to the water source, and curled up next to it, taking a short drink of water. He felt Egan scamper off to get some water as well, before snuggling against Ryuu's pelt, keeping an eye on the scene, to make sure the dead were dead, and to watch Otso and his almost dead opponent.

| Otso stared down at the fallen male, watching him. Slowly, gently, his jaws lowered to the other's throat. "You were strong, but I was stronger. They were brave, but you were braver. What is your name? I will remember you." He whispered softly. Perhaps the paralysis wasn't so bad as to stop the male moving. But if that was the case, his lungs and heart would have stopped. They had not. A sense of regret settled in Otso's heart. He had taken more lives. Would he ever be free of it? He was suddenly tired of this life he had forged. Why had he been so jealous...
If he had been human, perhaps tears would have fallen from his eyes. Perhaps he would have wailed to the sky, curled in a ball, and lowered below the surface. But as a wolf, his body simply softened, his orbs clear and soft. His ivories parted. He found he had no heart to kill his opponent, but nor could he leave him to die in pain. He wrestled with himself. "Do you want this to end?" Otso asked, his maw by the fallen wolf's aud. The male was beyond help, but Otso felt that he should die with a shred of dignity. He prepared to end the torture.

| The dying wolf scoffed weakly, as if his voice would fade at any moment, "Just kill me like a real wolf would if you're not into torture. You are, no- were a warrior. Names don't matter... you're too soft. Next time... dead." When the escaped assassin returned to continue the hunt, he'd bring even more backup, and perhaps better warriors would also be summoned. This wolf suddenly acting like a pure, would die. He could tell the other wasn't always like that. It was probably the whelp. For some wolves, he had a weird effect on them despite his name. Uttering the name alone should put wolves on guard. Instead, they see the whelp and lower their guard. Stupid. Just stupid. | |

| Soft... Yes, he was growing soft. Now he thought on it. But was it a bad thing? Perhaps. Only time would tell. Ivories closed on a throat, blood seeping into his maw. The taste, once cherished above all else, felt alien to his tongue. It no longer quenched his thirst. This damn whelp... He was bewitching. A taste of Otso's own puphood, confused and alone. Otso, however, didn't have a mentor. He liked to call it a picture of what should have been, bu wasn't. There was nothing he could do about the past, nothing he could do about the future. Just now.
"Ryuu, shall we press on?" He said, jaws releasing the limp throat. He looked again towards the brooding mountains, rather looking forward to the expedition that he was about to embark upon. "And this time, let's hope there are no more freaky warrior-types that have some kind of hate for you, eh?" He smiled, but it did not reach his eyes. A cold anger was kindled in his breast by the wolves that had scorned them so. He winced as his flank reminded him of it's abuse with a sharp stab of pain that burned in his nerves, and the thought of running added cold dread to the mix. He managed to hide most of his inner feelings, but they were betrayed by the slight stiffning of his muscles and the twitch of his face with the pain. Yes. To the mountains they would go.

| He couldn't help but overhear the words exchanged. What had he done for an assassination team to be sent after him? He looked at his reflection in the small pool of water. The blood had been washed off just recently, but he could still see it in his mind. How had he done what he did? He went through the actions, but it was almost as if some other force had taken the reigns. What had that been? A past of his past rising up, or was something wrong with him?
Ryuu had too many questions and no answers. Otso's voice was now directed at him, but he only heard some of the words. Enough to know what the other was talking about, though. Standing up, he looked at Otso's injuries, saying, "They look like they sting a bit." It was his fault, really, his new guardian was injured, even if Ryuu still didn't really know what they wanted. He couldn't have done what those assassins had said. He wasn't quite one year old yet. There was no way he could have done what they claimed he did. Anyways, Otso probably knew what he was doing, even if moving around while injured didn't seem to be logical.
He stood up, the mongoose opting to walk again, as if knowing he was tired. How did they understand one another, anyways? Clearly time had something to do with it, but it had to be intentional time together rather than their own respective species. It was too tiring to think now, though. He wanted to rest, but Otso wanted to keep moving. Probably not a bad idea, but that didn't prevent his weary body from complaining.

| A wry smile crossed a weary muzzle. Through the fog of pain, the dryness of the other's words, even if unintentional, amused him.
"Ryuu, I am tired too, but we must press on..." He shifted himself into the repetitive beat of the lope, ignoring screaming muscles and burning paws. His tired pillars begged rest, his paws sliding in the sand without their usual energy. He wasn't so old for this to be caused by old age... It was his purpose. It was gone. He had no idea of what to do beyond reaching the Mountains, although admittedly, a change of scenery would be much appreciated.
"Would your mongoose friend like a lift? We need to be fast, and leave fewer trails, lest they return. It is likely that because we are tired and weary, they will assume..." He paused for a sharp exhalation, followed by a stabbing gasp to refill lungs. "They will assume that we will not want to carry Egan, and may simply look for his tracks along with wolves. We can do little about our scent, but the winds may well help us with that. In any other situation in which one is not getting tailed by an assassination team, one would not move on inuries." He added. Although he was unsure if Ryuu doubted, he figured that any doubts were best addressed sooner rather than later. "But considering the threat that brute left, I think aching wounds are the least of our concerns for the moment, but I do apologise for the risks I am asking you to take. It is less than you deserve."
His breath was soon wheezing through a tightening throat. All this oxygen his tired muscles were demanding was getting too much. Of their own accord, his legs suddenly froze, and he tipped, muzzle first, to the ground, and landed with a painful thud on his injured side. A soft yelp escaped him, and he struggled to unlock his knees.
"Wh- what's happening to me?" He muttered to himself, icy fear, for so long absent, began to grip him once more. His already desperate breaths came faster as he struggled to regain control of his rebelling body. He forced himself to calm down, and lay still, trying to relax himself. As he calmed and his breath returned, so did control, until he lay, in complete physical control. His mental control, however, was out the window. "I'm sorry about that." He grinned, but no emotion was behind the smile. It was as though he had just adopted a mask, a plastic mimic of emotion without the depth of flesh and thought. He jumped to his feet, sand spraying out, and panted softly before pressing on, body relaxed, but his eyes wild with the contemplation of a repeat performance. What was wrong with him?

| He stood up without a word, still a little distracted and in shock. Ryuuketsu started moving his feet, to follow behind. When Otso offered to lend his back to Egan, he responded, "He doesn't weigh that much. I can carry him." In the following few seconds, the mongoose climbed on the wolf's back when he paused in mid step to crouch. He hadn't thought of their tracks being trackable, having figured they'd eventually be a wind. Then he realized there were probably wolves who did nothing but track their whole lives and were experts.
After a few moments, his ears flicked, picking up labored breathing, and debated whether to comment. It'd probably be passed off as nothing, though... Not a breath later, Otso just collapsed, as if his legs failed him. He stopped running, silent, confused. He hadn't gotten over the past events, and his mind was struggling to keep up with what was happening now. It looked like the other regained his body after some worrisome moments. How long it took, Ryuu didn't know. What caused stuff like that to happen? The suddenness of the attack without proper time to warm the muscles? Poison? A paralyzing agent? Age? The body being too stressed? Infection? Something else? Otso seemed fine now, so maybe he shouldn't be overly concerned? He had a feeling that this shouldn't happen once they reach that mountain. It still seemed as ominous as ever. Definitely not a friendly place. Ryuu was still attracted to it... assuming no one there knew him.
