| The elder tensed, frozen to the spot as he heard Conall's challenging retort. Rawbones shot him a caustic glare, narrowing his eyes. That better be a promise, I will be back, he thought, irate. Gritting his teeth, he forced himself to turn around and follow after Echo, knowing it was much more important to tend to her training than get in a fight. Still, he let loose a furious growl as he went, spitting out the words, "Insolent pup!" He couldn't stand such a mouthy youth. He trotted after Echo, his fiery gaze fixed on the ground as he set one paw in front of the other. He lifted his nose periodically, scenting the air to ensure they were still on course. She did well tracking down the den, although he noticed when she paused. She seemed distracted and almost confused, and he was suddenly able to forget his quarrel with the younger male. He wondered what had made her stop in her tracks so abruptly. He said nothing, giving her time to find her bearings and adjust her direction. Suddenly she was off again, as though she'd never lost the scent. Maybe she hadn't. Something had bothered her, but he couldn't tell what. Perhaps she would say something in time, or perhaps it was nothing at all. At last they came upon the site, where the birthing scent was heaviest, mixed with a light milky fragrance. All was quiet, save for the muffled squeals of the newborns. No other wolves had been here. For a moment, Rawbones pitied the fae within the den. It was so easy for a male to have his way with a fae in heat, and when the whelps came it was just as easy to disappear. He saw Echo looking to him, and realized she was waiting for him to announce their presence. Ears folded back, and he gave an audible sigh. Even he didn't wish to approach the den. Although, he'd never been struck down by a denning fae, and he'd been around for more than a few births... however, the notion of it was still unnerving. Shrugging, he forced himself to approach the den's entrance. He was met instantly with a low growl and crimson orbs gleaming with hostility. He seated himself, not looking down into the dark tunnel. "It's Rawbones," he stated quickly, watching out of the corner of his eye for movement, "Echo and I will be guarding the area surrounding your den. Let us know if you need anything." He waited a moment, giving her time to process the information. He jumped a little when her form suddenly appeared at the den's entrance, and she came to sit outside. Remaining still, he listened to her speak just briefly, then nodded to her. He heard the whelps inside crying out, while Bloodeye ignored them. He cocked a brow to her, but she merely glared at him, so he shrugged and turned around. He padded over to Echo. "Ready to get started?" he asked her. He wanted to get her started on something that wouldn't be too disruptive with the whelps nearby. He looked to the surrounding area, the training space they had to work with. It was rather dense, so there wouldn't be much room for them to practice anything together. Still, there were exercises she could do on her own. "I'll show you how to make use your environment when you haven't got a training partner," he said, moving over to a wide tree. It was something he hadn't done himself in a long time, but not something he'd forgotten. He positioned himself several feet in front of the tree, then leapt up - he struck first with forepaws, then turned himself at the precise moment so that he could kick off with his hinds. As he landed upon the ground again, his claws dug into the terra and he whipped around to face the tree, positioned to lunge again - however, he shook himself off and stood straight. He winced slightly as his muscles and joints protested against his sudden, sharp movements. It was a simple exercise in agility, learning how to manoeuver one's own body to keep balance, as well as constant movement. "I want you to work on that until you never lose your footing again," he said, adding, "And you must build your strength and endurance. Travel the territory of Jabbar every day, and take your training seriously." He nodded her, indicating her to get started. Once she could control her body effortlessly, it would become easier to find a way to harness the inner demons to her advantage. She already had a greater advantage than he did, and that was her cool attitude. Rawbones had always been one to react to anything that provoked him, but Echo had a special talent when it came to questioning her emotions and the actions of others. He moved out of the way and flopped onto the ground, hoping she would keep busy for a while. +Pain+Hate+Lies+Guilt+
Bloodeye awoke with a start as she heard pawsteps outside her den. Not knowing who was there, she emitted a low, rumbling growl. She hated that her instincts forced her to care for the sniveling balls of fur within her den. Looking out, she saw a familiar form and recognized the scent, but it was not one she was pleased to see. There was just one wolf she wanted to see right now, someone who could rid her of her problems and end this nonsensical chain of instinct. Denning, birthing, nursing, protecting... why even bother? When Rawbones spoke, she slipped out of the den, smirking when she saw him startle slightly. She sat down, blocking the tunnel's entrance, tail wrapping gingerly around her base. "I don't need anything," she rasped, her throat dry, "Perhaps just some fresh air." Now that she was out of the den, she felt compelled to stay out. She could hear the pitiful whining from within, knowing that they called to her, needing her. But why go back in to ease their worries? She knew that the longer she stayed in there, the more difficult it would be to leave again. She needed to separate herself from them. She saw the old man looking at her questioningly, as though wondering why she ignored the pup's cries. She locked eyes with him for a moment, willing him to mind his own. At last he shrugged and stalked away, returning to Echo. Blinking, Bloodeye backed herself into the den just slightly, so that she could take in the fresh scents of the woods while her hind stayed warm and cozy. She watched as Rawbones got to work showing Echo a basic training move, and chuckled to herself. Lucky me, she thought sarcastically, I have a senior and an untrained whelp to protect me. Snorting, she turned her head away, placing it on her paws. She was growing weary of the guilt and the confusion weighing down on her. More than anything she just wanted to flee and find a new life, yet at the same time that simple notion bored her to tears. She wasn't interested in meeting new wolves in a far off place. She just wondered when the excitement of life would come her way.

Echo's ears flattened at Bloodeye's growl from within the den. Again, she was one of the last wolves she wanted to cross; she knew she wouldn't be here whatsoever if not for Rawbones. She knew in her head that the fae wouldn't hurt them, as they were a part of the pack, but instinct ran through her core. You can take that bitch if she does anything anyways, said the voice in her head, to which she ignored and pushed down. She clawed at the dirt with her nails, digging up a worm, watching it squirm in the dark, rich earth. She heard the rasp of Bloodeye's voice and she was surprised to hear her out of the den, leaving her whelps crying and squealing behind. At the same time, she wasn't surprised, given Bloodeye's careless nature. For some reason, it made Echo uncomfortable... She continued to distract herself by burying the worm back into the earth, where it would be kept safe from the weather and birds.
Rawbones' words came to her and she nodded, her brow firm. "Yes," she replied with the utmost seriousness, and stood at attention. She was the student, and he was the teacher, and Bloodeye was the audience... whether she was watching or not. Echo's silvery, heliotrope-hued eyes locked on Rawbones, ready to soak in what he had to show, grasp whatever concept he threw. "Using my surroundings," she reiterated."Got it." She nodded again. She watched as he turned and leapt at a thick tree trunk - at first, Echo thought he was going to run into it, but he hit it with his front paws, and then his back, kicking himself off of it to land on the ground. It was a smart, quick maneuver, she could see, likely used for close corners in dense forest such as this. When he said that this would be her exercise, she knew that she would be at it, and here, until she mastered it.
Rawbones went to lay down and watch or rest, whatever was required of him. Echo released a heavy breath held in her chest, facing the same tree he had bounced off of, his long talons having left scratches in the old, wet bark. She knew it would be a long time until she could reach the height that he had, but it wasn't about the height or the strength behind the movement. She briefly meditated on the action, imagining herself pushing off of the tree as her teacher had, and before she realized it her legs were pumping beneath her, sprinting for the tree. A wild thought suddenly occurred to her - when was she supposed to jump? If she jumped too early, she wouldn't reach the tree, and if she jumped too late, she would smack right into it. The idea came so suddenly that she skidded to a halt, the dirt digging between her toes. She promptly whirled around and went back to what she considered her "starting line". Coward.
A small snarl escaped her at the words in her head. To those around her, they would assume it was frustration. The young white wolf began in the same position as before, but now her muscles were more coiled, her thoughts more focused. It wouldn't be hard. She took off at a run again and leapt without thought, her front paws outstretched to grab the tree, and she felt the bark crunch in her claws. She pushed off like Rawbones had with her back legs, but gravity had other things to say. She came crash-landing down onto the forest floor, her left shoulder catching most of her fall. She tumbled, and a louder, more vicious snarl burst from her throat. That wasn't supposed to happen. Work until it's perfect. I know perfection. I am perfection. Work for me.. She closed her eyes and shook her head. She couldn't let that voice - that inner demon - get the best of her like that. What she was doing was for herself. For Rawbones. For the pack... For Damean. She was a danger to herself just as much as she was a danger to everyone else. Yes. That is the value she would have to focus on. What she was working on was for the pack, not for the beast within.
She released another sigh, and returned to her starting line. Her heart beat in her ears, and she knew that she was becoming more worked up about this than necessary. "Run," she commanded herself, and again, headed for the tree. "Jump," she said, and all four paws left the ground. "Push," she grunted, feeling the bark against her pads, clutching the tender bark of the trunk. "Turn," she said, kicking off with her hind legs. "Land," she muttered, all four paws on the ground again. "Turn," she said once more, facing the tree.
That was it. That was the motion, the steps, the way to do it. Echo didn't look to Rawbones for approval or praise. This was an exercise. It was expected of her to get it completed, until it could be done without effort. She went back to her starting line, and once more, took off for the tree. "Run. Jump. Push. Turn. Land. Turn," she said in sequence with her movements, drilling it into her head, exhaling at each step. Sometimes she succeeded, and sometimes she did not. More than once, did she fall and have to push her anger down. Though not much sun filtered through the trees in this part of the wood, what did shifted and changed, until it showed that significant time had passed. The birds began to sing at the twilight hour. It was around this time did Echo begin to slow and pant, her legs shaky beneath her. Her muscles burned and she feared her body giving out on her; it had taken quite the beating, afterall, though self-inflicted. "Run. Jump. Push. Turn. Land. Turn," she repeated several more times, until she found that she did not have to say it out loud at all. She could hear the words in her head, louder and clearer than the other voice that was often there.
Finally, she could not take the practice anymore. As she landed once more and headed back for her starting line, she looked to Rawbones for guidance. "I need water," she said, unable to hide the slight whimper in her voice. She was too tired to restrain her composed demeanor at the moment. She glanced at Bloodeye's den, wondering if she had been watching, or even bothered to. Her gaze returned to Rawbones, waiting for an answer.

| Tristan shrugged and let Blade handle Conall. "I've done my analyzing," he said gruffly, "What has happened is my fault for taking him from the pack. But I leave him at the mercy of the pack now. He thinks he's such an adult, he can take what's given to him." He smirked when Conall shot a growl at him, and acted as though he didn't care, though it stung him deep within. His son was no longer the innocent, loyal boy he used to be, and he didn't know where he went wrong. But this was what he had to do. "I take my leave, Blade, temporarily. The boy can make his own decisions. He's on his own now. I'll be just past this area. It was a long journey down from the mountains and I just ask for a short rest. I'll be in hearing range when it comes time to speak with Akiko." With a respectful nod, he hobbled away, trying to ignore the shouts of his son behind him.
"Fine, walk away, you coward! Just remember who fed you! Remember who carried you through the mountains on his back! You'll starve to death!" Conall narrowed his eyes. It was clear his father was ignoring him. He muttered to himself. "And I will laugh over your starved corpse." Turning his attention back to Blade, he let out a chuckle. "You really think the old fool is more valuable? He can't even hunt. But I'll take your word for it, O Warrior." The black bru ached to sit on his haunches, legs sore from the trip back to the packlands, but he refused to look complacent. "I need no sparring partner, but if you insist... fine. I care not whom I fight." He was beginning to cool down, and hopefully Blade would notice so he would be left the hell alone. "I take your words with a grain of salt, but I take them nonetheless. Just know that I have no quarrel with anyone else here. Pack law may prevail, but truly, our little... family spat is of no consequence to anyone else here. I let him up and we were going to move on. You and Akiko decided to make it your problem, and it would have solved itself."

| He nodded towards Tristan, knowing the older wolf wouldn't go far. But back to Conall... With a snort similar to that of amusement, he said, "I'm no true warrior. You could be, but are still very lacking. Is warrior your path, or another? Your sparring partner will rest on the title you pick and will show you to be useful." If Conall were to stay in the pack, Blade would make sure the training was harsher to make up for the younger not being around to be trained earlier. An older wolf was more set in their ways than a pup and took more to correct habits. It wasn't hard to guess Conall wouldn't dream of being a healer with his current attitude and bulk. They already had a potential apprentice in Echo, too. Niveus had always been good at discipline in the past. He didn't know about presently, but he might as well be put to use while waiting for Damean's judgement. Although surprisingly more civil outwardly, he was internally seething. Attitudes like Conall's reminded him all too well of his own father and that pack. They showed strength, and couldn't back it up. A little surprise, a little mistake was their downfall. It was a ridiculous attitude to have, judging by the end result. It was their own fault, one that he gladly exploited. With Conall... he was still young enough to see his errors with proper training. One that the pack as a whole could teach. | |

| Akiko listened to Skyfall, one aud turned out to listen to any problems coming from Blade quarter. It had been some time since they had seen the father son pair and this interruption was exactly the best way to integrate back into the pack. She heard the words exchanged between Conall and Rawbones and she mentally snorted. Foolish child, they think they can push their weight around just because they have it. The situation would take care of itself though with or without bloodshed. It was always the way, especially around packs like this. For the time being though Rawbones took off with Echo to oversee whatever he was training at the moment. Bloodeye was like to have birthed her pups by now and this wolf before her was asking to waste space as he traveled through their lands. She pursed her lips clearly not approvingly. And then she laughed, a short sharp sound that had nothing to do with humor.
"Why not? Slink around here and get snapped at, I can promise you no safety here. Hell I have an idea, why don't you go spar with the lumbering idiot over there? Matter of fact, I insist." A devilish grin took over her features showing her sharp canines in an decidedly unfriendly manner. "If you're going to laze about you might as well be useful." Turning she yipped to catch Blade's attention. "Bring him here Blade! We're to have us a show!" Ivory bodice slipped away from the center of attention making way for the pair to come over. Keen blue eyes watched Skyfall to see what he would do..

| Rawbones was glad to see Echo's serious attitude as he showed her what he wanted her to perfect. She was quick to soak in the information, and she set to work instantly without any further questions. Satisfied that Echo had gotten the idea, he settled into position where he could oversee her training. He watched her first attempt, cut short by doubt. He perked forward, wondering what she would do. She moved back, snarled to herself and tried again. The senior relaxed once more, smirking and giving a small chuckle as he watched Echo scrabble clumsily at the tree bark on her next attempt. It wasn't that he was laughing at her - instead, he was remembering days long ago, memories that had lain dormant in his mind for many year. He remembered those trying times in his youth, the many failed attempts during training exercises, and the frustration that came with it. He was drawn back to the present as Echo flung herself at the tree once more, this time uttering to herself the movements she needed to make in order to succeed. Rawbones grinned widely, very pleased with the way she executed the move. Though she didn't look his way, he could tell that she had gotten it. Her next leap was more sure, and she performed again without flaw. There would be variation in her performance each time, of course, as she got used to using different muscles. Then her body would tire, and it would become more challenging to move the way she wanted or intended to. But that was good practice as well; one was not always well-rested in a time when they needed to be agile and strong. It would get her accustomed to working under less than ideal conditions, and would strengthen her confidence as well. As time went on, Rawbones dozed lightly here and there, lifting his head periodically to scan the environment and to watch Echo's progress. Each time, he was pleased, and nodded his head in approval. The constant sounds of claw scraping bark, and the quiet breeze tickling his ears, soon lulled him into a deeper slumber, though it was not long-lived. Her voice startled him, and when he lifted his silver eyes, he saw Echo looking his way. There was a slight whimper in her voice, and her posture was hardly composed, tired limbs trembling just slightly after such exertion. Rawbones nodded, and rose to his paws, stretching his body with a contented groan. Though he'd slept only in bits and pieces, he felt rejuvinated. "You've worked hard today, Echo," he spoke gruffly, offering her a rough grin, "Let's head to the stream." They could each drink their fill, and Echo could soothe her burning muscles in the water. Then Bloodeye came over, silent and wraith-like, staring with an ominous grin that somehow seemed devoid of true amusement. Rawbones raise a brow, glancing over to her den where he could see a tiny nose poking out, and squeaks of protest from the whelps left behind. She seemed such a careless fae, nothing like he'd seen before... even Shadow had shown more dedication to her own spawn than this woman. And he'd seen many litters come along, some with mates to tend, and others without. Never had he seen a fae who would so willingly leave her den unattended within one sunrise of birth. He pitied her, for there were none, not even a friend, to help with her young, yet she distanced herself from the pack with her mere aura of hatred. "I understand if you need to refresh yourself," he spoke to her with a low tone, looking her in the eye, "You should return to them quickly, though. They'll not do well so alone. I'm sorry your mate is not here to help you... it will be difficult, but they still need you." He quickly found himself staring down a feral vixen, and prepared himself for the worst. ------------------------------------------ Bloodeye peeled one eye open and glanced over to where Echo was now attempting for herself the move she'd been shown. Both crimson orbs then became fixed upon Echo. She watched as the young woman halted upon her first try, nails skidding in the dirt. Eyes narrowed - she would be disappointed if the fae was too doubtful of herself to keep trying. Then the fae with the silvery, lavender-tinted orbs leapt again, this time performing the move exactly as it was expected. Bloodeye quirked a brow, the only signal of interest expressed upon her visage. Perhaps there was more to Echo than what met the eye. The bored bitch continued to watch as the younger femme scrabbled against the tree, succeeding again and again, then facing some mishap. Overall, Bloodeye was impressed with the fae's determination and resolve to get the move right as quickly as she could, without rest. She hadn't been impressed by much lately, and was glad for the slight distraction from her weariness. Instinct called her at last, and she finally slipped back into her den when all had been silent for some time. She sighed as she flopped down near the whelps, and they squirmed and squealed desperately as they clambered to suckle while their mother was present. How annoying. Why did she tend to them? Something deep within pulled at her, yet she wanted to resist it. In time, she would. When they had nursed long enough, she placed herself at the den's entrance again. The sun shifted, and Bloodeye spent the day watching Echo go through the motions, pushing herself through exhaustion and persevering. Occasionally she tended to the helpless creatures within her den, then left them once more. By the end of the day, as twilight set upon them, the whelps had managed to squirm themselves far enough to find her as she lay in the den's opening. Bloodeye flopped onto her side, exasperated as they nursed again. At last she would leave them, moving away from the den entirely as she heard talk of going to the stream. She needed to stretch her legs and get out for a while. She was dreadfully thirsty, and hungry as well, but she knew her body would hold out without a meal. She padded over to the duo, smirking with hollow amusement as she knew she made them uncomfortable. The older brute shot her a questioning glance once more, and she grinned at him, a toothy grin that showed a little impatience. She didn't want to take any hints from anyone. Then he spoke, and her eyes widened into a glare of tumultuous emotions, tail thrashing the air. For a moment her eyes turned upon Echo, daring her to interrupt, before she whipped back to face Rawbones. Her face crinkled into an enraged snarl, teeth glistening and hackles spiking as she pressed close to Rawbones, her jaws inches from his neck. He was unflinching, but she still seethed, letting forth an angry hiss. "I need no mate," she rasped, her voice a crackling, hissing rumble, "I've done this before and I don't need your advice. If you'd like to talk about this again, I promise that you will get to see my ruthless side." It was a warning and a dare all at once. She hated this subject more than anything. She knew all too well that she was alone, and that at some point she had to decide what she would do next. At last she turned away from him, having said what she wanted to.
Rawbones stood unafraid but disturbed. He stepped back from the fae. "I apologize for striking such a sensitive nerve with you," he retorted, seeing her stiffen again, "Just know that if you won't, I will see to it that those whelps are cared for." He growled at her, a serious look in his eyes. He didn't care how much responsibility he had to take on. He would not see whelps born to Jabbar going to waste because of a careless mother. The two glared at each other in a silent deadlock for many moments before breaking apart. "I don't care what you do," she huffed dismissively, "Just don't get in my way." Bloodeye swerved away, still intent upon quenching her thirst. Rawbones watched her go, then glanced to Echo, wondering how she fared. "Shall we?" he asked, gesturing in the direction the ivory bitch had gone.

She couldn't exactly tell what her teacher was thinking, but he seemed to approve of her performance. She nodded with her tongue lolling out of her mouth, panting, and went to head for the stream when Bloodeye approached. The menacing gaze the witch shot her was one that made Echo turn away; not in fear, but in disinterest. Whatever business it was, Echo knew she had no place in. Maybe if she was prying, like Damean, or opinionated, like Conall, she would have wanted to know, but just by listening she found out what it was anyways. Silvery-lavender orbs watched as Rawbones tried to tell her to take care of her whelps, but of course, Bloodeye would listen to none. It was a selfish act, really. She said nothing as the two exchanged heated glares, for it was not her place. Then, Rawbones conceded, and gestured them for the nearest stream.
Once they were out of earshot, the questions came bursting forth from her, as there were usually many that consumed her thoughts. One stood out in particular. "Why is Bloodeye so angry all the time?" she asked, looking to Rawbones with a perked brow. Her question was more than recognizing Bloodeye as a member of the pack, like Crow, Akiko, and Rawbones himself; no, she wanted to get to know Bloodeye, but she had the feeling that the woman wanted nothing to do with her, or anyone else, for that matter. "It's like anyone she comes across she instantly hates," she continued. "Even though they've done nothing wrong."
They reached the stream, to which the young white wolf sunk her paws into and lapped with her tongue, the cold water rushing to her parched throat. It was deep enough for her to bathe in and soak her heated frame, but her gaze remained on Rawbones, eager for an answer to her question.

| Rawbones noticed Echo's complacent presence while Bloodeye had her rant and then took off. She was unbothered, and quietly minded her own until it was over. He liked that about the young she-wolf; Echo wasn't going to be one to easily lose her temper and get into a bad situation for the sake of ego. Her demons wouldn't control her, and she would be capable of great things. Even he didn't have such a tight lid on his temper, which he knew could be his downfall at any time. As they moved along, now heading toward the water, Rawbones was surprised by her question as Bloodeye went out of earshot. He blinked, looking to her with a slight tilt of the head. She seemed to have a genuine interest, and he wondered if he would be able to give an acceptable answer. The actions of others was a subject he often wondered about himself, and though he had come to some of his own conclusions, he could never be sure if he was on the right track. He nodded slowly and thoughtfully to her observation, as it seemed that Bloodeye hated everyone she came into contact with. How could he describe it? "Anger... it's more complex than it appears at first glance," he replied, his tone low and smooth, eyes blinking again, "For some, it's an outward thing, something they can project. It seems to boost their ego, makes them feel stronger. Sometimes it's their only strength. For others, it would seem, it comes from deep beneath the surface..." He narrowed his eyes, watching his paws as he strode along leisurely. He knew his own anger was mostly egotistical, reacting in offense to actions of others. For all the rough edges, the anger and darkness that surrounded him, he did not harbour the same sort of hatred that Bloodeye did. In fact, he couldn't think of much that he truly hated - there were things he couldn't tolerate, but nothing in the pit of his gut that he despised. Glancing to Echo again, he continued speaking. "I think... where there is now great hatred, there was once a powerful love," he said, wondering briefly if he was rambling too much, but continuing anyways, "Somewhere in that woman's past lies a terrible pain, a wound in the heart that has never healed. I have my own wounds, as well, yet I have healed from them. But I've been lucky enough to have this pack... without the wolves here, who knows where I would be. Probably dead." He looked to her as they reached the water, wondering what she would think of this - she didn't know anything about his past, she just knew him as he was now. He was suddenly set in a different mood, more ponderous than anything as he heard the water trickling by. It wouldn't be the first time that Echo would cause him to speak on less trivial subjects. He glanced to the distant form of Bloodeye - she stood chest deep in the water, far enough that the stream would drown out the wolves' voices, yet close enough to be with them. "We all react differently to the events in our lives," he murmured, casting his gaze ahead now, "Despite all the hatred that Bloodeye shrouds herself in, there must be a reason that she clings to this place. Otherwise she'd have left long ago.." He glanced sideways at Echo as she dipped into the stream to soothe her parched throat and weary muscles. Rawbones dipped his head low enough to lap at the water, but he did not enter it with his bod. Satisfying his thrist, he licked his lips, and quirked a curious brow in Echo's direction. +Pain+Hate+Lies+Guilt+
Bloodeye meandered lazily to the water source, her tail cricked in annoyance. She hated it when others had to question her actions or poke their nose into business that was not their own. What did anyone care what she did with these whelps that were her own? Their father was not of this pack. Their blood was questionable. Unworthy. It had all seemed like a fine idea at the time. Now she languished in her own guilt and misery. She reached the water's edge in short time, and was relieved at least to have the chance to cool her body and hydrate her dry and sticky throat. The cool liquid seeped through her pelt and soaked her to the skin. Jaws snapped at the water, taking up many mouthfuls of water. Licking her lips when she was finished, she noticed the other two come to the stream's edge, both indulging in the refreshing fluid as they conversed. Crimson orbs narrowed, wondering what they were talking about, but she could not hear them from where she stood, and moving closer would only cause them to go silent. At last the femme heaved her body from the water and shook out her coat, water spraying from her soaked fur. She glanced once more to Rawbones and Echo. She had nothing to speak about with them, and it seemed they were content in their private conversation. With a deep breath she turned away and padded into the undergrowth, heading back in the direction of her den. As much as she hated going back, she could not bring herself to abandon them when they still depended on her. It seemed not much time had passed when she found herself back at the densite, and heard the light scuffling and whimpers from within the cave. The high-pitched whines caused a reaction in her instincts, and once more she entered the den dutifully, lying on her side and allowing the whelps to find their way to her. Despite their short existence, they had grown stronger already. Bloodeye had provided them with enough chances to nurse, but never making it easy, they always had to scrabble over the dirt floor to find her. Their rapidly growing bodies were strengthening quickly. They suckled greedily from her as she lay still. At last, when they had finished, Bloodeye closed her eyes, allowing herself to drift off, another day finished, and many more to come, the future unknown...

She stood in the water, listening to what more Rawbones had to say. She looked down into it and saw little hairs floating downstream, and knew that upstream, Bloodeye was taking a break as well. Echo did not look at her, though she could feel the fae's eyes on them, and instead chose to gaze at her own reflection. She considered her own anger; it was either the source or the lifeblood of the demon within her chest. Which one was it? Did she come off like Rawbones, rough around the edges? Or like Bloodeye, wearing it on her outer fur? At times, it felt like it was both. She took a step deeper into the creek, allowing the cold water to rush past just below her shoulders, chilling her legs and underbelly.
"You've given me a lot to think about," she said, still gazing at her own reflection. She thought about how she had wanted to return to Midnight Meadows, where the wolves were pacifist and pure of heart, and could possibly mold her into something that she was not. Did Rawbones understand that she wanted to more than just control the beast within? She wanted to eradicate it entirely. Banish it to another realm. Destroy its very existence. It was clear that that power did not lay in Jabbar Junayd, but she knew she could not leave now. She had made a promise to the pack, a promise to Damean. Who knew how long she would have wait to relinquish this demon? The way she saw it, there were two paths, if she remained: She would end up like Rawbones, saved by the wolves around her, but forever clouded in darkness. Or, she would end up like Bloodeye, hateful and forever toiling with her anger. She sighed. Was there no middle path?
It was with these thoughts in her head did she notice her silvery eyes darken and redden as she gazed into the water. Her teeth were clenched and her body was tight. "This is my face," the demon hissed inside her head. "This is what you will become." Echo shook her head. "No, I won't," she murmured, inhaled, and then ducked her head below the surface. The cold water surged in her ears, but even as it did, it couldn't wash the echoes out. "You can't get rid of me and you can't control me. I'm a part of you, dear Echo... Ever since you were conceived. Even before then. Past. Present. Future. I'm here to stay."
She raised her head above the surface, moving back to the banks near her teacher. She did not sit or lie down, though. No, she was rejuvenated, and regarded Rawbones with hard, determined eyes. "We need to keep training," she said. "I won't rest until this demon does."

| She did not approve; Skyfall could see that the moment she pursed her lips, followed by harsh laughter. He was more than grateful to take his leave, since he hadn't planned on staying for too long to begin with, but no, he could not go just yet. Akiko cackled for the boy, Conall, to come hither and spar with him. Skyfall said nothing, his brow set, eyes dark grey and sober. He wasn't sure who was being made the bigger fool at this moment; the boy and his arrogance, or himself and his prudence. Regardless, he cast his gaze over to Conall, inwardly noting the young brute's large size, and likely strength. There was much more to do with fighting than what was on the outside, though. A lot of it was in the head.
Akiko's eyes were upon him again, and he met them. "Challenge accepted," he replied, undaunted by her coarse announcement, his tired feet, or even the danger that was to be had ahead of him. It would take much more than this to shake his bones.

| The warrior built wolfess walked along the ground with the dirt kicking up on her back paws slightly, as her head looked up to the sky. The summer was in full swing, as she looked around at the trees. Kali had gotten lost. After she had ran away for a bit, she couldn't quite remember anything that was here. Sure, she remember her pack; but the land lay out had zapped away in her mind. The brown dame walked quiet along the path, her scent hidden by mud and sweat. Her pupils lowered from the sky and looked about in all directions, looking for a location that looked like it was familiar to her. Slowly, her walk stopped, as she lifted her nostrils into the air, scenting for the others. Her auditories flattened against her skull as she went on.
Her cranium cocked from side to side, with her orange and weary orbits looking around the land of Jabbar Junayd. Her lean form stretched across the dirt she walked along. With her scent covered, it was quite dangerous to walk along the territory, as she wasn't sure if the others had remembered her. With her reflexes sharp, Kali looked for other that approach her, ready to leap at any given moment. To prevent from get more lost, she stopped, turning counter-clockwise for watching. Slightly paranoid, she slightly grinded her canines along one another, waiting. A quiet bark escaped her vocal cords.

| He was listening for Conall's response when suddenly Akiko called him. Angling himself to look back from the corner of his eye, he noticed her backing up, putting the new wolf more in the center. A gleam appeared briefly in his orange orbs as the implications came up. Apparently they had been thinking along the same lines...
"You heard her," he stated, gracefully stepping out of Conall's way, gesturing for him to go first. There was no way any of them would let the whelp escape, and Blade felt the need to rub it in... in case the other wasn't smart enough to come to that conclusion on his own. Yet there was no appearance of disdain reflected in his eyes. Just... nothing but their usual hardened appearance. Auds flickered, though, as he thought he heard something, but brushed it off. It didn't sound like a threat, and he was far more interested in what was occurring now. Besides, Niveus was standing among the others at the moment, who may have horrible hearing, but had strong instincts and awareness.

| Rawbones nodded his head slowly as Echo gave her simple answer. "Mmm," he mumbled, watching her as she stared into the water, her eyes reflecting thoughtfully. He hoped the answer he gave was enough to satisfy her. Suddenly her body went rigid, and mirrored in the water was a pair of gleaming red eyes. He lifted a paw, stepping towards her. "Echo!" he barked, hoping to interrupt the darkness that tried to surface. But the young fae murmured something and dunked her head into the water, thrashing from side to side. The demon speaks to her, he thought, intrigued, It's much more real than any of my 'demons'. No wonder Echo so fervently wished to rid herself of the beast. He dipped his paws into the water, moving closer to her, wondering if he needed to drag her from the water. Before he could reach her, she had lifted her head and turned her gaze on him, her eyes familiar once more. He blinked in surprised at the determined look that had returned to her gaze, despite having been drained after her intial training. He couldn't help a slightly proud smile crossing his face. "Certainly," he said, dipping his head to her, "Let us run swiftly." He wasn't sure if she would be able to overcome her demon with the training he could provide, but he wouldn't discourage her efforts by saying so. He would find a way, somehow, to help her overcome it. For now, they would return to the area of Bloodeye's den and continue training so that she could become a skilled and disciplined warrior, a mere step in the direction of her goal. Rawbones would ensure that they were in a less densely treed space this time, as they would practice something different now. As the sun set beyond the treeline, he thought it might be best if they stay out of earshot of the den so that they would not disturb the sleeping mother and her brood. They would still be close enough to hear if Bloodeye were to call out in distress, though he doubted she would. He'd need to be more alert for snarls of rage than helpless wailing. Rawbones moved past Echo, flicking his tail against her shoulder, then he took off. He moved as quickly as he could with long strides, though he was not so flexible and nimble as he would have been in the past. Echo could overtake him easily. Coming upon a clearing the he liked the look of, he halted, claws digging up the soil. "Here," he ordered, turning to face her, "This place will suit our needs." He planted himself in a ready stance, joints flexed and muscles coiled, his tassel held out straight to steady his posture. Despite the strain on his aging body, he had a rush of energy that made him feel light and youthful; it had been a long time since he'd trained anyone, and it brought him back in time. "I want you to try to take me off my paws by any means," he said, his gaze focused on her, though the haze of age blurred his vision, "But don't depend on your strength - focus on speed, direction and balance." He watched her, ready for her to make a move. He wasn't sure what to expect from her - it was very possible that she would make all the same mistakes that most young wolves made, but then again she might just surprise him with something different. She wasn't typical, and he looked forward to seeing what she would do. | |

She wasn't sure what he was thinking or what he had seen, but Rawbones beamed at her, proud. Proud of what? She wondered, but decided against asking, for it quickly disappeared and they left the water. She shook her white coat dry, muscles rejuvenated and senses refreshed, the sun setting beyond the trees; they would be training late into the night. She had never been out on the Jabbar terrain at night, and she knew naught of what darker creatures thrived within the forest. She wasn't afraid, but she knew it would be unwise to leave her elder's side, lest there was anything fiercer within. He moved at a brisk pace, and at first Echo thought they were heading deeper into the woodland, for the sun was fading and the night sounds awoke, but it was just the falling of night. They actually moved out of the trees and to a small clearing, spare a cluster of young saplings. Rawbones came to such a sudden halt, Echo almost ran into him.
Rawbones positioned himself, leaving plenty of space between them, though her objective would be to close that distance and knock him down. She didn't go after him right away, though; he was a much larger, much sturdier wolf than she, and a simple tackle would send her sprawling instead of him. If she was the size of Damean or Conall, her chances would be better, but she wasn't; she was small (though, not as small as Akiko) and nimble. Focus on speed, direction, and balance. A blind charge wouldn't have done her any good. Her brow furrowed, thinking of the hunt from earlier, the moose that everyone had taken down together. Teamwork had done the trick there, but regardless, it had been a large beast. If she remembered correctly, they had knocked it off balance by attacking one side until it could go no further. But, she was one, and yet again she was thinking too much. If she was in a real battle, she would have already been taken down.
She had one idea, even though she wasn't sure if it would work. Some of it had worked on the moose. She bolted from the spot, her head down and tucked between her shoulders, her body low to the ground. She wanted to shut her eyes, but she did then she truly would have been blind. Instead, she raised her eyes to what she could, seeing his legs come into view. She braced herself for the impact, hoping to knock him off balance with all the speed she could muster. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

| Rawbones watced her eyes move as she thought out what she should, or what she could do. Then she made her move, and she came charging toward him, her head low and shoulders flexed. He stood still, giving her a chance to try out her tactic. She came barreling head-on towards his legs, intent on knocking him off balance. He braced himself, then felt her form collide with his legs. Sure enough he was knocked off his paws, but went tumbling over her back as she charged in. He let out a loud huff as he thudded against her, then the ground. He wasn't heavy enough to crush her, but it wouldn't do her any good in battle to end up underneath her opponent - unless she had a plan for further action. He shifted himself and got clumsily to his paws. "Nice try," he commented, "If you're going to do it that way, get ready to dodge swiftly out of the way, and get on top of your opponent while you still have the advantage. When a wolf is thrown off-balance, it takes them a couple seconds to regain their bearings, especially if they're bigger than you." Agility would be her greatest attribute. Facing her again, he readied himself. "Let me show you another way of doing it," he said, grin spread across his maw. He rushed forward, looking as though he would leap on top of her. The moment before collision, he would dart just slightly aside and lunge for her foreleg with open jaws. He snapped for it, though he would use only enough pressure to firmly grasp her leg, not to crush or gash it. He would propel himself forward and up with her foreleg still clamped in his jaws, lifting the shoulder from below and using the momentum of his movement to unbalance the body. It had to be done with haste so that an opponent didn't have time to readjust his footing. It would not be a move to use against heavier wolves, but it would work well on smaller and more light-pawed wolves. If he had aimed well she should land flat on her back. "If you read your opponent's movements carefully," he began to explain, "You would be able to counter this. If another wolf tries to unbalance you, don't resist - instead, give into the pressure. Most wolves won't expect this, and the momentum they were using to unbalance you could in turn unbalance themselves if they find no resistance from you." Then Rawbones stood back from her, waiting to hear if she had any questions, or if she would try again. "Of course, all of this puts you in close quarters with the enemy's jaws," he warned, "So be cautious, protect your eyes and throat." He nodded, then readied his body once more, in case she would dart in towards him. | |

She hit her target with all the force she could muster, utilizing her speed over everything else to knock him off balance. The next thing she knew, the dirt was in her face and he was sent tumbling over her, almost crushing her, but she managed to slip out and he managed to finish his tumble before doing so. She stood up and shook her head, slightly dizzy (more from the sprint than the tackle), and nodded at his words. They made sense. She would have to be even faster than she was now, and that would only come with more training. The white yearling stood her ground as he prepared himself, even if she knew that he could knock her over with ease.
The elder was coming for her and like when she had tackled him, she braced herself for the blow to come, but he darted to the side at the last second, snatched her foreleg in his maw, and threw his weight to flip her onto her back. It was something her mind had been ready for, but her body was not, as a snarl erupted from her black lips, curled back and vicious, silvery eyes losing themselves to red. She was down for just a moment and she heard his words, but she could not focus on them. Kill him, the voice inside her head said, and she lunged for him, her reason lost, teeth and talons stretching for Rawbones' neck, exposed to her from his tackle. Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!

| Rawbones hadn't noticed the change in her as he rambled on and on, his hazy eyes oblivious to her curled lips, ivory fangs blending with the white of her coat - it was all a snowy blur to him. It was only when the glow of red showed in her eyes that he realized something had gone seriously wrong - things had taken a turn for the worst. He hardly had time to react, and his only course of action was to turn himself just enough so that her strike took him at the back of the neck, rather than his throat or jugular. He let loose a snarl as her teeth latched onto his skin, and he felt his own mind shift, pupils drawing tight and nerves twitching. This wasn't good. Not again... he thought miserably. This scenario was just all too familiar to him... Too many times he had savaged the wrong wolves, killed them, frightened them or chased them off. He didn't want to do that again. He'd already had feelings of rage toward Echo in the past, after her attack on Daija during the pack hunt. Maybe this was just a bad idea... I'm too old for this. He fought hard to control himself as he felt the sharp pain in his scruff, but he knew any moment the switch would go off, just like she had, and in moments they would be at each other's throats, needlessly. He thrust his body towards her, hoping to jar her just enough to throw her off so he could decide upon his next action. The muscles in his neck tensed and he thrashed for a moment, jaws snapping at the air. Then he clenched his teeth firmly, willing himself to get free from her jaws and get away. With any other wolf he would have viciously reached for her forepaws to change the course of the fight, but he knew if he gave into that desire to reach for flesh, he would surely lose himself. He still had a chance now, and he didn't want to turn on Echo. | |

| His ears flicked, having noted those who were missing, and who he knew the location of. There was that seemingly shy wolf, her name started with a "K." Blade hadn't talked to her, just seen the fem, so he didn't know anything about her, except for the fact she seemed to deliberately avoid meeting their eyes. There was no way he was going to leave from this show just to satisfy his curiosity on her whereabouts. For all he knew, perhaps she pulled a Zai and Bloodeye and just wandered off the lands for a while... the latter seemed to have settled, though, for whatever reason. Niveus just took everything in, knowing he should stay quiet until he was fully accepted into the pack. He was confused about what appeared to be a father and his son. Turning on each other was a common thing from where he was from, but it was all about a power struggle while maintaining some form of respect instead of discarding it altogether. Apparently the pack didn't appreciate what just happened, either, as Blade went over. Soon, the older wolf left, and the younger was calling out insults to both his kin and a different wolf, leading a young fem away. Now the disrespecting wolf was to be pitted against a recent arrival, who Akiko seemed to have a growing distaste for. | |

Echo's teeth sank into the scruff of his fur; neck or chest or hindquarter, she couldn't tell, but she thrashed her head about, clutching onto his flesh. "Yeeeessss... That's it! Tear his throat out, rip his flesh from his bone! Bleed him dry!" the demonic voice screeched in her head, louder than any thunder and any words that Rawbones might have said. A fire flooded through her veins and she found herself powerless to stop this unstoppable force, her reason lost to the fearsome tyrant in her mind. Rawbones' muscle was thick but Echo's teeth were sharp and she drew blood, heightening her thirst, a ferocious snarl erupting from the caverns of her chest, low and feral. Claws dug into him as she latched on, but suddenly he shifted and threw his weight, and it was at the right enough angle to dislodge her and send her sprawling. She tumbled, her frame being so light in comparison to his, the woods and the world spinning red before her eyes. She wasn't down for long, though, and skittered back onto her feet. When she looked up in an aggressive position, Rawbones was snapping the air and turning about to face her, and horror struck when she realized what had just happened.
Her ears flashed back and her tail tucked. She panted and licked her lips, tasting blood that was not her own. The tears bubbled in her eyes like the blood had boiled within her not even moments ago, her once clean white coat now grazed with dirt and flecks of red. "Rawbones," she said, heliotrope eyes wide. "I... I don't think I can do this." She resorted to collapsing back onto her haunches, her shoulders together, trying to make herself as small as possible. Why are these things happening to me? She wanted to blurt out, cry, scream. But there was a ball of fear burning in her stomach if she did. If she relinquished herself to these emotions, terrible things would happen.
She suddenly wished for the warmth of Exodus. The fae had been so kind to her, looked after her, when she did not have a mother or family of her own. At this moment, she wouldn't have even minded the company of Cinder, the female from Midnight Meadows so long ago. Yet all the while, somewhere in her mind, she also wanted Damean. Damean. The name resounded in her head, as the "other" voice often did. Where was he? She needed to apologize to him. She had pushed him away... but not without reason, said the other half of her. What had just happened with Rawbones could have happened with him. She wouldn't be able to live with that kind of guilt. Hurting him like that. Or Exodus, or Cinder, or anyone, really. The episodes were short, for now, but what would happen if they were longer? She didn't know, and the thought terrified her. She couldn't stop the tears streaming down her cheeks now.

| Everything happened so quickly. He felt her jaws dislodge from his flesh as he threw himself at her. He landed on his paws with a slight stumble, having not known whether her weight would be lifted from him or not. He turned, teeth clashing against air audibly, hackles spiking along shoulders and spine. His angry silver orbs glared at her, seeing her aggressive stance as she looked up at him. Then it all melted away from her being, just as quickly as it had come. His eyes were still wide as he stared at her, his face fixed in a perpetual snarl, tongue flicking eagerly. Her voice hit his auds, but he had a difficult time registering the meaning as the sound of a rushed heartbeat drowned out her words, his breath coming in ragged pants, riled by the sudden aggression. Then she became smaller, reclining onto her haunches. Rawbones could do nothing more than stare at the moment, his body frozen to the spot, afraid that if he moved he might not stop. When nothing happened for several moments, he was able to take a deeper breath, slowing himself down, calming his nerves and lowering his hackles. He licked his lips, feeling tension leave his body slowly. At last he blinked, cutting off the fixated stare that had bored into her. He shook himself, hoping that the moment was done with. Fixing his gaze back upon her, his eyes softer now, he remembered what she had said. He frowned, his brows pressed together in concern. Was it the training that she couldn't continue with? Or did she fear staying here with the wolves she cared about, knowing what she was capable of? As the silence passed on, tears began to flow down the young she-wolf's face. He took a pace towards her, inhaling another deep breath to ensure that he had calmed entirely. "You can't give up, Echo," he said, his tone low and smooth, void of any commands, "I know how you feel... what will you do now?" He understood that her plans might change now. Now that she had confronted her demon in a most frightening situation, seeing what might happen at any time seemingly out of nowhere. He saw none of the determination in her eyes that had been there not so long ago, but he knew why. She doubted herself, and she feared what she might do to those she really cared about. He understood, for he had been there many times before and he still struggled with it. He always thought he'd been on the path to controlling it. But perhaps he was wrong, perhaps it was not necessary to spend an entire lifetime trying to overcome one's demons by strength of will alone. Perhaps she would find an answer to this rage in a way that he had never been able to find. Curious, he wondered what she would say, or what she would choose to do.. | |

Was he angry? Was he sad? Was he disappointed? She could hear his snarls and she feared that he had had enough. She had asked him to teach her, afterall. It wasn't as if he had offered. The thought made her head sink further between her shoulders. But then he approached, his fur still ruffled, but his voice calm and soothing. He knew how she felt... Yes, that was why she had wanted him to teach her in the first place. He understood without having to say so, even if he just did. He had been the one to follow her after her first episode, through the rain and into the woods. No one but him had ran after her; that was reason enough. When he came beside her she leaned into his shoulder, the tears still streaming down her cheeks.
"I... I don't know what to do," she sobbed. "What did I do, Rawbones? What did I do to deserve this? I'm not perfect. I don't expect to be. But it's like... it's like I'm being punished." And by who? Her thoughts echoed, continuing on with what her mouth couldn't. She didn't know what to believe in times like these. Was it some god that deemed her unworthy? Or a curse from a past life? Where could she find the answers, and who would tell them to her? Unlike most of the other young wolves, she had questions to the things they already knew: they knew who their parents were, what they were like, and who they would become. She had to ask questions and find things out on her own.

| ~When you blink do you only find the misery between the lines?~
When she leaned into his shoulder, he was surprised, as she had been so distant before. But she relinquished her strength now, and he braced himself to allow her some comfort as the tears streamed down her face. Her voice came in wracked sobs. His heart lurched as she went on - he didn't know what he could say to make her feel alright. He was used to wolves that wanted to embrace darkness. Echo was so different. She feared it, and she wanted to get away from it. He washed the tears away from her cheeks, feeling like it was all he could do. He wanted to tell her that she could beat this and become powerful. But maybe that was not what she wanted. He sighed. "You didn't do anything," he murmured to her, tail flicking against her, "You were born this way for a reason - we all have a purpose. Maybe it seems like punishment right now... but there will be a time when the purpose becomes clear, and things won't seem so hard." Would anything he said be taken as comforting? He was sure she would still be left with so many questions buzzing in her mind, an easy trap of self-pity to fall into when one was upset.
"For now, Echo, I would suggest that you get some rest," he said a little more firmly, "If you allow it, your misery will take advantage of you. Perhaps it will only feed the demon more." If Rawbones knew anything, he certainly knew sorrow, and he knew how it worked. How it seeped under the skin and clung to the heart heavily, taking everything from you. And the more you paid attention to that sorrow, the more it grew, the more difficult it became to find an escape from it. One needed to find a haven early on, or risk being lost to a miserable existence. "It's okay to quit today," he insisted, nosing the side of her neck, "The sunrise will seem more promising." Well into the night already, they would probably sleep through sunrise, but a new day would bring a renewed sense of purpose. He nudged her, prompting her to rise to her paws, knowing that she would only feel worse if she allowed herself to crumple to the ground and wonder why things didn't go the way she had hoped. Why it was so hard. Why she wasn't just like everyone else. There were many questions that would go unanswered right now. It wasn't something she could change, and no amount of tears would help.

"A purpose?" she echoed, leaning into him. Again, she found herself questioning her heritage, who it was that had wanted to bring her into this world with the awful curse within her. The elder's warm tongue wiped her tears from her cheeks, and she couldn't help but feel comforted by them. Maybe... He was right. It was punishment for now - or it felt like it - and would mean something more much, much later. Her thoughts were weighing heavy on her mind and she was starting to get dizzy, and nodded at his suggestion to get some rest. She stood up and took a step back from him, pausing, lavender eyes glowing softly in the fallen dark.
"Can we stay in this area? Near Bloodeye's den?" she asked. "I... I don't think I'm ready to go back to the pack yet." As of this moment, she knew that she wouldn't be able to face Damean, though her heart ached for his closeness. His spirited voice, his warm laughter, his kind nature. She wasn't ready to see him, being the mess that she was. And, if the training between her and Rawbones was to remain confidential, there was still a lot that they had to cover. It was also at this moment that her stomach let out a loud growl; it had been too long since she had last eaten, but at the same time, it was something she wished she could put off. She had no doubt that it was the taste of any blood that changed her into... something else. A soft smile traced her lips. "Maybe eat something, too?" she asked hopefully. It would be something to distract her, to keep her from drowning in the sea of her thoughts, for she wasn't a very good swimmer.

All he could do was nod when she echoed his words of purpose and leaned into him. As she got up and took a step back, her eyes glowing softly, Rawbones stood also, tilting his head as she asked to stay in the area. He could understand why she wouldn't feel ready to face them yet. Her emotions ran high right now, and surely her nerves were shot. Trying to explain her condition to worried friends would only make her feel worse at the moment. He grinned as her stomach growled, and she looked to him with just a trace of smile. He nodded to her proposal, his eyes gleaming at the prospect of food. "Yes, filling our bellies will make sleep come easier," he agreed, knowing it would keep her mind off of things and make her body feel more relaxed once she was sated. He would enjoy a warm meal right now, as well. "Let's go then," he said, flicking his tail. He lifted his nose to the air, seeking out anything of interest in the dark woods. The forest was rich with prey, and they could choose anything they desired. As he stepped toward an interesting scent, his leg buckled and he slumped to the ground. Surprised, he attempted to right himself, only to find pain shooting through his leg.
He looked to Echo, grimacing. "Not sure what's wrong..." he said through gritted teeth, "I must have wrenched it back then..." He wondered if he had injured himself without realizing it during their little scuffle. Damn this old body! I have to continue training Echo! And how will I hunt like this? Thoughts ran wild through his mind, and he began to doubt his abilities. If his body kept up like this, it wouldn't be long before he became totally useless - he despised the thought of that. Growling to himself, he slowly got to his paws, keeping his aching foreleg slightly lifted as the other pressed hard into the ground. His tail wavered back and forth as his legs were unaccustomed to such a posture. Just then the undergrowth rustled, and Rawbones stumbled to turn and face the direction of the noise. Even through his blurry eyes, he could see the ivory pelt that shifted from the darkness, joining he and Echo in the starlit clearing. Why does she have to come here now? he wondered, narrowing his eyes, I don't know if I trust that woman, especially when I'm like this...
Woken by the scuffling of her own brood, the ivory bitch sat up, glancing at each of the gray forms as they tussled, growing ever stronger. She hadn't thought they would live this long, but alas, the fate chosen for them had never come. She hadn't even bothered to name them. She still wasn't sure if she should. Perhaps she would leave that to her packmates. Pondering this, she moved to the den's entrance, looking up to the navy, star-speckled sky. The pups broke apart and chased after her. One nipped at her tail, while the other two stopped to peer out into the darkness of night. She grinned, narrowing her crimson orbs. "You want to leave already?" she rasped, nudging them each in turn with her muzzle, "I suppose it's never too early. Why keep you in, when you can go out into the world and become strong?" She shifted out into the night, and the pups burst forth, stumbling on tiny legs and yapping at each other. "Quiet!" she growled, circling around the whelps, "You'll attract all sorts of creatures with teeth bigger than mine to eat you up!" Satisfied that they had heard her message as they quieted down, she swiped her tongue over their ears.
They ran off again and wrestled around in the undergrowth, following her as she sauntered along. They had grown so much in so little time, and the more she tried to distance herself from them, the less she was able to. A mother's love is the only kind of love that is real, she thought to herself, wanting to ban the thought and cherish it at the same time. Though she wished they hadn't come along at all, she knew it was too late to try to rid herself of them entirely - she would raise them after all. Her leisurely nighttime stroll was disturbed as snarls broke out in the near distance. The pups squeaked and huddled around her legs. Curious, she headed toward the noise, certain that the snarls must be those of her own packmates. But why would Echo and Rawbones been fighting? Perhaps they'd come upon an intruder. "Stay close," she warned the whelps as she crouched down and slid through the undergrowth. She paused when the two wolves came into sight; they were facing each other, blood dripping from Echo's jaws, Rawbones' teeth bared in a feral snarl. Narrowing her eyes, she settled down to watch, wondering if she should interfere or allow them to sort it out. It seemed she would not need to do anything at all, however, as they settled their dispute and sat down side by side.
She tilted an ear up, trying to hear what was said as Echo sobbed and the elder dried her tears. This has to do with her demon, she thought, remembering how the young fae had been shunned for her earlier deeds. Bloodeye smirked. The fae would have to face it sooner or later. That demon would not be going anywhere. As the two wolves stood, she heard talk of a hunt, and then the scruffy old wolf fell down. How is this old duff supposed to teach a young demon anything? she thought, tongue swiping over black lips. She stood and crept through the brush, stepping out into the open. Three whelps toddled around her paws, uncertain about moving forward, but unwilling to be without their mother. "Perhaps you'd do better as a pupsitter," Bloodeye suggested matter-of-factly with an amused grin plastered to her face, "You seemed fairly committed to the idea earlier, and now that you can't walk, it seems like an obvious choice, doesn't it?" The senior wolf looked most unimpressed as she strode forward, tail waving through the air. She heard him emit a low growl, but ignored it, instead turning her gaze upon Echo. "I'm pretty hungry myself," she said, her tone full of feigned innocence, "I've had whelps to care for, after all. Surely it wouldn't be a bother if your packmate joined you in a hunt?" She glanced back to Rawbones, who seemed at a loss as to what to say. He can't possibly hunt in that condition, and he knows someone will need to watch my litter if I go hunt, she thought, And Echo needs to pull her own weight if she wants to eat.
"Actually, why don't I just take over from here?" she asked, tilting her head, "I've been wanting to put myself to better use for the pack." The old wolf shook his head, his scruffy hackles bristling slightly. "This is my duty," he insisted, glancing to Echo, "I promised to continue with her training, and I will. Nevermind this paw, it'll be fine..." Bloodeye merely shrugged with a smirk. "Rawbones, you can't possibly go on in that condition," she said, seating herself, tail wrapping around her paws. She looked to Echo, knowing she probably wouldn't like the idea at all. "Well, Echo," she went on, addressing the younger wolfess, "Why don't we go find something that will satisfy our hunger?" She smirked, waiting to see what the young she-wolf would say.

Echo followed her teacher further into the woods, but they didn't get very far when he suddenly fell, his leg giving out. She halted, waiting for him to get back up, but she could see that doing so caused him immense amounts of pain. She came beside him, offering what little shoulder she had to support his larger frame. "I think you should rest," she said. "I'll find something for us to eat, and maybe some poppy. You probably sprained it." It was just a guess on what was really wrong with him; she had learned only the basics from Petra, and for all she knew, it could be a sign of something more severe than just old age. She didn't want to think about what would happen if it was, and at that moment, the sound of whimpering pups caught her attention. She looked up to find Bloodeye approaching, her three whelps clustered around her paws.
She listened to the exchange between the two older wolves, her expression falling to stone and reason. "Bloodeye's right," she said. "If you can't walk, you can't hunt. And someone needs to watch the pups." She said this aloud, but what she really wanted to say was, Don't worry, I've hunted before, it won't be long, or something to that effect. But she kept the softer side of her personality quiet, for now, as if she were pulling a mask over her own face in front of Bloodeye, since she seemed to already be wearing hers. She shifted her weight, letting him know that she was done supporting him, and came forth to Bloodeye. "Let's go," she said rather matter-of-factly; the quicker they could get the hunt over with, the quicker she would be able to rest again. She was tired, and mildly frustrated that Rawbones couldn't be with her to hunt, but she kept her mouth shut, not being one to complain.

| Bloodeye felt her pride tickled as Echo agreed with her. She rose to all fours, tail lifting into the air. She could see the fae's stoney expression, and knew deep down she probably wasn't pleased with the proposal. Now she looked to her whelps, and nudged them toward Rawbones. "Go sit with old man Rawbones," she cooed to them, casting a smirk in the old wolf's direction. He was gritting his teeth, but holding himself together in front of the whelps. The pups whined in confusion, protesting going closer to Rawbones, and not understanding staying behind without her. "I need to hunt now," she insisted, nudging them more firmly, "You can try a taste when we return." She licked them each, then turned away from them, watching as Echo moved toward her. The fae made her statement matter-of-factly, and Bloodeye grinned, choking down the growl that wished to surge free. She didn't want to let some youngster lead her around by the nose, but right now she had her reasons for doing what she did, and she would shove down her dominance. "Right," she agreed, getting ready to move swiftly, "Let's slaughter something tender and innocent." She glanced at Echo with a maniacal look in her eyes. She licked her lips, already knowing she wanted a taste of fawn meat. They would eat whatever they could find, but surely the woods would be full of desirable prey right now. This was the perfect time to find a wandering young animal and take it down before it even knew what was happening. Rawbones couldn't believe what was happening. He was being cast aside like some useless, rotten scrap of meat. Echo moved from his side, and he caught his own weight. Bloodeye herded the whelps toward him, introducing him to them as the old man. He tensed, wanting to rebel like a frustrated pup, but he kept his jaws clenched, lips tightly pursed. As the two faes got ready to depart in search of a meal, he sat down. Would she remember to seek out poppy from him? He hoped that she wouldn't forget him. The pups crowded around him reluctantly, and with a heavy sigh, he drew them in closer. "Best stay with me," he said gruffly, "They'll both be back once they've got a bite to eat." The whelps were clearly confused and worried, and nothing he could say would take that away right now. He couldn't play with them to distract them - his leg wouldn't allow such movements, and they were too young to wrestle with a bigger wolf right now anyways. They would just have to see for themselves that Bloodeye would come back. That was, if she would come back. He wasn't sure about her. Laying himself down, he would watch them set off, hoping they wouldn't be long... | |
